How to Install Wall Panelling Around a Window

How to Install Wall Panelling Around a Window

Wall panels are the perfect combination of design and practicality. They are also extremely straightforward to install, even around fixtures, fittings, and windows. This blog will explore how this is possible, provide guidance on how to achieve a professional finish, and how to choose the right wall panels for you.

Can You Install Wall Panelling Around Windows?

Yes, you can! With the correct tools and techniques, you can neatly install wall panelling around windows simply and easily.

Why Fit Wall Panelling Around a Window?

There could be several reasons why you need to fit wall panelling around a window. For example, creating a seamless, cohesive finish throughout the room; protecting walls from moisture, particularly in bathrooms; enhancing insulation; or for soundproofing. All these factors can contribute to your need to install wall panels around a window.

Tools and Materials You'll Need to Install Panels Around a Window

To successfully install your new wall panels, you will need the following tools. It is a good idea to gather all these tools together before you start your installation, so they are on hand as and when you need them:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Saw
  • Ruler
  • Spirit level
  • Stanley knife
  • Set square
  • Staple gun
  • Adhesive

PPE, such as gloves and goggles, is also recommended.

Step-by-Step: Installing Wall Panelling Around a Window

Before you start installing your wall panels, it is a good idea to read the manufacturer's instructions, as these may differ depending on which panels you've chosen. However, below is an overview of what the installation may involve:

  1. Decide which trim you would like

There are two types of trim you can use, an external corner trim or an L-shaped external corner trim. The external corner trim is fitted to the window reveal outer edge first, and the wall panel is fitted to the trim. An L-shaped external corner trim is fitted after the panels, which makes this the easiest option. The trim you choose will determine how you fit your panels around your window.

  2. Measure

For straight windows with no windowsills, use the tape measure to measure from the floor to the bottom of the window and mark on your panel. Then measure from the floor to the top of the window and mark on the panel.

For windows with large windowsills, set the panel as close to the windowsill as possible and draw around the sill to denote where to cut.

  3. Cut

Firstly, always remember to measure twice and cut once! Cut the panels where they have been marked, making space for the window. If your window has a sill, cut the panel carefully to the shape of the windowsill. Once cut, sand the cut edges of the panel with soft sandpaper to create a professional finish.

  4. Install

Apply adhesive to the back of the panel in a zig-zag pattern and stick to the wall, holding the panel in place for a few minutes. You can now move onto your next panel.

Installing Wall Panels Around Windows in Bathrooms and Showers

Installing bathroom wall panels around windows in bathroom and shower rooms is the same as fitting them around any other window. However, in rooms with high levels of humidity and moisture it is important that all panels and trims are correctly sealed. Once installed, use an appropriate sealant to secure the edges of the panel and trims to ensure no water can pass through.

Using Acoustic Wall Panels Around Windows

PVC, composite, and wood panelling can typically be cut to fit around windows. However, the 3D design of acoustic wall panels means they do not sit flush to the wall and therefore will not fit flush against a window. As such, we would recommend using acoustic panels on other walls in your room and leaving your window wall free of panelling.

Dealing with Tricky Areas: Corners, Sills, and Reveals

Whilst installing your new wall panels is straightforward, you may come across areas such as corners, sills, and reveals, which require a bit more thought and effort.

Installing panels around windowsills has been explained in the section above, and as long as you measure correctly, cut accurately, and sand any rough edges, you should end up with a well fitted, professionally finished installed panel.

To fit a wall panel into a window reveal you need to:

  1. Measure: Measure the window reveal's length and width and mark on your panel. Remember to measure twice!
  2. Cut: Cut your panel to size, sanding any rough edges.
  3. Install: Your trims should already have been installed before fitting your panels, so simply apply adhesive to the back of the panel in a zig-zag pattern and fit the panel into the trim and apply pressure. Start with the top panel and use the side panels to help secure it in place, then finish with the bottom panel, which will help to keep the side panels in place.

In terms of fitting panels in corners, our easy to follow step-by-step video guide will help. However, if you're unsure about any aspect of installation, call the manufacturer and they should be able to provide you with further guidance and help.

Choosing the Right Wall Panels for Around Windows

The right panel for you will depend on a number of factors, such as the room you're renovating i.e. if it is a bathroom, you will need a waterproof panel, and the style of your home. However, we would recommend using a panel that will sit flush to your window to create a seamless, coherent finish. As previously mentioned, 3D panels, such as acoustic panels, will sit proud from the wall and result in an untidy, incomplete finish if fitted around a window.
