Sound Absorption Coefficient Graphs Based on Different Methods of Installation

Laboratory measurements of sound absorption coefficients were carried out in a reverberation room according to the test method of EN ISO 354:2003.

Screwing Directly into the Wall

By fixing the panels directly to the wall with screws, this method creates a firm and unyielding surface. This minimises the panel's ability to vibrate, which is essential for preventing the reflection of sound waves. The material of the panel itself is then able to absorb a greater portion of the sound energy, contributing to a measurable sound absorption effect, as indicated by the coefficient of 0.3 MH.

Screwing into Timber Battens

The use of timber battens introduces air space between the panel and the wall. This, coupled with the Rockwool insulation placed within, significantly enhances sound absorption. The air gap acts as a buffer, while the insulation material traps and dissipates sound energy as it passes through. This method results in a noticeably improved sound absorption coefficient, reaching 0.62 MH.

Installing on Light Steel Joists

Installing the panels on light steel joists creates a larger and more controlled air cavity. The addition of sound insulation cotton further improves sound absorption. The increased air gap and the specific properties of the insulation cotton work together to reduce sound transmission and absorb a wider range of sound frequencies. This method achieves the highest sound absorption coefficient among the three, at 0.90 MH, demonstrating the benefits of a larger air gap and effective insulation.
