Preparing Your Home for Autumn

Preparing Your Home for Autumn

As autumn approaches and the temperatures start to drop, it is a good idea to start preparing your home for the colder months ahead. These preparations needn't be complicated or time-consuming. A few simple checks are all that's needed to help protect your home during the autumn and winter months.

Clean gutters and drains

Clear your gutters and drains of any leaves, dirt and debris and clean thoroughly. This will help to clean and prevent blockages, which if left, can cause gutters to overflow. Clearing and cleaning your guttering also gives you an opportunity to inspect it for any damage and repair any splits, holes, or cracks before the weather deteriorates.

Check your roof and exterior

Have a walk around your home and check your roof for any damage, such as missing or loose tiles. You can also inspect your windows and doors at the same time and ensure they're weather-tight before winter arrives.

Secure fences, sheds, and garden gates

As the winter winds increase it is a good idea to ensure your fences, shed doors, and garden gates are correctly fitted and secure.

Clean decking and paths

During the autumn and winter months, decking and paths can become covered in fallen leaves, debris and dirt. These can cause surfaces to become extremely slippy. Cleaning these areas and keeping them free from dirt and debris will ensure they remain safe, as well as helping to keep them clean and looking lovely.

Store away garden furniture

Whilst some garden furniture can stay out all year round, there may be some items that need protection from the elements. Ensure these are all safely stored away until you need them again.

Check outdoor pipes and taps

As temperatures start to drop it's important to check your outdoor pipes and taps. Any leaks could cause ice to build up, which can be treacherous underfoot. There is also the risk of pipes freezing in extremely cold weather, which can lead to them bursting. Insulating pipes in cold weather will help prevent this from happening.

Test outdoor lighting

As the nights draw in it's important to ensure your home is well lit, both for your safety and the security of your house. Testing outdoor lighting and replacing batteries when required will make sure you and your home stay safe all winter.
