Preparing for Summer - Decking in Detail
Decking is the ideal addition to any outside space, creating an area for relaxing, entertaining, or dining. If this recent warm weather has turned your thoughts towards transforming your garden with decking, then this blog is for you. From factors to consider when planning your new deck, to how to choose the right decking for you, we hope this blog provides a good starting point from which to start your transformation journey.
Planning and choosing your decking
Before running out to buy your new decking, it is very important to plan your installation first.
Location
Firstly, you need to decide where you want your deck to go. For example, will it be adjacent to your home to create a beautiful inside/outside living space? Or would you prefer to create a standalone feature in the centre of your garden with a path leading towards the house? Once you have chosen the location for your new decked area, you should start researching the various types of decking on offer.
Material
Decking comes in a variety of different materials, with the three most popular being traditional timber, PVC, and composite. Wood decking is still one of the most common decking materials used. Whilst beautiful, it is important to remember that wood requires regular treatments to protect it from the weather. If left, wood can splinter and split making it uncomfortable and unsafe underfoot.
PVC is a cost-effective way of creating a decked area. It does not need as much maintenance as wood, only the occasional sweep and wash down, and should not split or splinter. However, PVC is not the most aesthetically attractive option.
Composite decking is the perfect combination of both wood and PVC. It has all the beauty of timber, but with the advantages of PVC. It is slip, split, and splinter resistant making it safe and comfortable, and does not require any treatments to protect it from the elements.
Colour
Your next decision is which colour to choose. There is a wide array of colours now available, from traditional browns to contemporary greys and blacks. You may wish to blend your decking into your garden by choosing natural tones, or you may choose to create a truly contemporary eye-catching deck in black or anthracite grey.
The colour of your deck may also depend on the colour of other house furniture, such as window frames and doors, as well as bricks. If possible, ask for samples so you can take them home and see them in situ. This will give you a better idea of what your chosen decking will look like outside.
How much decking do I need?
Once you have decided on where your decking will be located, which material it will be made from, and what colour it will be, you need to work out how much decking you need. If your deck is a simple square shape, it should be easy to determine the amount of decking need. However, if your area is an unusual shape, it may be more difficult to calculate. If you need any help, our Decking Calculator is a good place to start. Simply enter the dimensions of your deck and it will automatically calculate how many boards you will need.
